Day 11 – The Sassy Fundo

Yesterday I talked about the feedback habit loop that contributes to building habits – both good and bad – CUE – CRAVING – RESPONSE – REWARD.

Good habits – like exercise can be trickier to build because we often don’t have a craving to trigger a response and bad habits can be hard to break because we have a very strong craving.  To break a bad habit focus on decreasing the intensity of the craving.  Yeah, I know its tricky.

Instead let’s focus on building new habits.  What habits do you want to create?  I suggest you create what James Clear (Author, Atomic Habits) calls Identity Habits – I am the type of person who… habits.  Habits that define who you are, not what you do.  Who before what.

Earlier in this series I said, I am a cyclist, it’s just what I do.  That is an identity habit.  You have identity habits both good and bad.  I am a non-smoker.  I am a non-drinker.  I am a sugar addict.  I am disorganized.

These habits are parts of my identity.  If I want to change my disorganization, I need to build a habit that takes tiny steps toward becoming a person who is organized.  Who before what.

Here’s a great question to ask and answer:

  • Is what I am doing, helping me become more of who I want to become?

This is what we have started with this challenge.  You are becoming a person who exercises consistently.  Step one is to start exercising – two minutes.  You are learning the skill to start exercising.  Once you get that down, then ask, “What would a person who exercises everyday do next?”  It might be to increase the duration 2 minutes every week until you get to 20 minutes.

If you are stuck, unsure what the next step might be, look around at people you know who exercise routinely, and ask what do they do? Then take a small step to become someone who does that.

Who before what.  Get it?

Think about who you want to become, then devise habits that support becoming that person.
